The Vine, the Stillness, and the Long Game

day five

We live in a time of constant motion. Scroll, click, run, reply, repeat. Even rest becomes performative, something to optimise. But fruit doesn't grow from movement. It grows from stillness, from depth. Jesus doesn’t say, “Go produce.” He says, “Abide.” Stay connected to the vine. Rest in me. Let my life pulse through yours. That’s the invitation. Not to achieve, but to remain. Not to hustle, but to grow.

DAILY READINGS

  • “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

  • Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
        whatever they do prospers.

    Not so the wicked!
        They are like chaff
        that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

DEEPER

Ever tried to grow tomatoes in a pot on a windy balcony? One day they’re flourishing, the next they’re snapped clean off. That’s the thing about fruit, it needs something steady to hold on to. Not dramatic. Just steady.

Jesus’ metaphor in John 15 is refreshingly low-pressure, and also deeply disruptive. You’re not the vine. You’re not the miracle-grow. You’re not the hero of your own growth story. You’re a branch. That might feel underwhelming, until you realise it’s permission to stop trying so hard. Not to check out, but to stay connected to the One who actually has life to give.

And let’s be honest, staying connected isn’t always easy. Most of us are tired. Burnt at the edges. Distracted by the endless scroll. Some days even opening your Bible feels like climbing a hill. But that’s the point: branches don’t produce fruit by gritting their teeth. They bear fruit by remaining attached. Even when they feel dry. Especially then.

What if that dry moment—when you reach for your phone in the toilet or autopilot into the next task—could become a holy margin instead? Not a space to fill. A breathing space. A pause to stay with Jesus, not rush on. It’s creating little places in your day where the conversation with him can continue. A slow walk. A deep breath. Choosing not to fill every empty second with tasks, noise or scrolling, but letting your heart find home again.

Psalm 1 paints the picture again. A tree by water. Not impressive, but deeply alive. There’s something wildly countercultural about becoming that kind of person in this city: quietly consistent, emotionally hydrated, slow to judge, quick to laugh, open to joy. That’s the fruit. But it grows over time, connected to the vine.

So no, this isn’t a productivity hack. It’s a spiritual reality. Jesus is where the life is. Stay there. And over time, you’ll find yourself bearing something better than output. You’ll carry peace, patience, gentleness, and joy.

RESPOND

What is one place I am straining in my own effort? What practice could help me stay connected to Jesus and let fruit grow naturally?

PRAYER

Lord, help me to rest in you today. Let my life flow from connection, not effort, and teach me to be still in your presence.

Also pray now for someone you’ve promised to pray for, or for a need you’re aware of in your friends, neighbourhood, or church family.

ACTIVATE

Decide on a moment to make a margin today. Don’t fill it. Let it become a meeting place.

Roots planted near the river grow deep without striving. Stay close and trust the water to bring life.
